Shenzhen, Jan. 15 – A surge of talent and capital has swept the humanoid robot industry, with over 30 senior executives from the intelligent driving (AD) sector crossing over to launch startups, marking a vibrant shift in tech innovation.
Key players include Guo Yandong, former Xpeng Chief Scientist, who founded AI² Robotics. The startup has secured billions in funding, launched an open-source robot model, and joined the ranks of global leaders in the field. Chen Yilun, ex-Huawei AD CTO, co-founded TARS Robot, raising $242 million through two angel rounds and demonstrating robots capable of precise embroidery – highlighting advanced fine-operation capabilities. Jia Peng, former Li Auto AD head, and Wang Kai, ex-Li Auto CTO, established Zhijian Power, securing $50 million in angel investment from Yuanjing Capital.
Major automakers are also diving into the track. Tesla plans to kick off Optimus production by the end of 2026, targeting an annual output of 1 million units, with its third-generation model featuring 22-degree hand freedom. Xpeng’s new IRON robot, leveraging 70% of shared automotive technologies, is set for mass production in 2026. Globally, over 20 leading automakers have joined the sector via independent R&D, investments, or partnerships.
Capital enthusiasm is robust, with China’s embodied intelligence sector witnessing over 140 financing deals in 2025. However, challenges persist, including unproven commercial models and public trust issues such as doubts over remote control of robots, calling for rational development amid the boom.
